Meet Dora, a bright-eyed 5-year-old with an infectious giggle and a love for storytelling. She was born with an extremely rare, almost unpronounceable eye condition that left her with no eyesight. Despite this challenge, her spirit remains unbreakable.
Recently, her kindergarten teacher introduced her class to writing. While her classmates picked up pencils, she felt left out. But, her teacher told her about the Perkins Braillers– a special typewriter that would allow her to write… just like her classmates. Up to that point, she’d only been learning how to read Braille, but she hasn’t been able to join in writing. She wanted to be included.
Like a lot of children, she turned to Santa. She asked Santa for a blue Perkins Brailler. Her request isn’t just about a machine; it’s about independence, education, and the power to express herself. It’s about having the same opportunities as her sighted peers.
This is where Aftersight – and you – step in. Together, we can be Santa for Dora– and for so many others. Your support helps Aftersight to offer adaptive tools like the brailler and a huge amount of audio services that inform, build community, and empower:
- Audio Editions Accessible (audio format) editions of local print like the Denver Post that are read and recorded by volunteers for people who are blind or low vision.
- Aftersight Originals: Podcasts that are produced BY people with vision loss or blindness FOR people with vision loss or blindness. These make sure everyone knows about benefits, helpful organizations, adaptive tech, mental health… and so much more!
- Virtual groups Like our Low Vision Support Group and our Audiobook Club.
- Tools for Independence: Free white canes, free smart speakers, other adaptive devices, and adaptive technology training.
Everything we do is free of charge – and extremely easy to find and use. Our Audio Editions and Aftersight Originals can be found by anyone with a need. We offer a broadcast, but most people connect using Apple Podcasts or Spotify. We even offer access via touch-tone phone! People can join one of our groups from anywhere in the state. And, of course, people who need adaptive devices will have them mailed right to their door.
Your gift will help Santa to visit countless people across Colorado, and his gift is independence and equal access. Every dollar counts!
Ensure that vision loss doesn’t mean a loss of opportunity or independence. To donate, simply click following button.
Your generosity will illuminate the path to independence for those we serve.
Thank you for being a beacon of hope in our community.
With heartfelt gratitude,
The Aftersight Team
