Kim was born in Colorado and grew up in Lamar. She got involved with the blind and low vision community nearly 25 years ago when she volunteered to read for Aftersight. She didn’t know it at the time, but Kim was following in the footsteps of her great great grandparents who had taught at a school for the blind in London. In 2001, she joined the staff as the Director of Marketing, and later Kim became the Executive Director in 2018. Before that, she held business development and marketing positions at engineering and IT distribution companies in the private sector and the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Outside of work, she enjoys knitting, reading, and going for long walks with her husband Doug and their dog, CeCe.

Penn Street lost most of her eyesight at age nine from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) after being bit by a rattlesnake. Growing up Penn discovered that Accessibility was the key to her community, career… and living her best life. She’s lived that life through the many hats she’s worn: ADA Coordinator, Outreach Managers, and member of Development Teams. She’s gone a step further yet by sharing her voice. Penn is the host of Aftersight’s flagship podcast, The Blind Chick, which shares the stories of people with vision loss. In addition, Penn volunteers on several boards and commissions that focus on upholding the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). When not working, advocating, or podcasting, Penn enjoys Alpine Skiing in the winter and the summer is filled with hiking, and paddle boarding.

Grants Manager

Office: 303-786-7777 extension 4111

Cell: 303-729-8893

brady@aftersight.org

Brady Steffl is passionate about language and communication, although it didn’t start with English. Instead, it was Mrs. Tasto’s Spanish class in high school. Then it was Mr. Engledinger’s German class. The real passion, though, came at Minnesota State University, Mankato in Dr. John Janc’s French classes. (Brady is obviously very cool.) Eventually, he returned to English, learned (some of) its wild rules, and embraced it. After years of using writing as a creative outlet, he began writing professionally in 2012 at Kansas State University. As the Communications Coordinator for the physics department, he split time between grants and other projects such as editing academic papers or textbooks. When he and his wife landed in Boulder County in 2013, he began working as a grants consultant for area nonprofits. In 2021, he joined the Aftersight team as the Grants Manager. When he’s not writing, he’s probably bouldering, cooking, playing guitar, or in the garden with his dogs. Or, he’s just in his sweatpants playing video games.

Beethoven, a goofy eleven-year-old Standard Poodle, was born at the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, where he trained to be a guide dog. Just after his second birthday, Beethoven met Penn Street, and they began their journey as a team. Beethoven loves to travel, swim in waterfalls, hike tall mountains, and explore cities around the world with Penn. His impressive career has landed him star spotlights in newspapers, magazines, and newscasts. His new favorite pastime is curling up under Penn’s desk at the Aftersight office, making sure the USPS deliveries are done correctly, and offer ups love to whomever and wherever is needed.

Melissa Fishburn

Treasurer

Melissa is a Colorado native born and raised in the Denver metro area. She works for Sprouts Farmers
Market as a Sales Ambassador, which is a marketing position. Melissa was born legally blind and struggled
to find adequate resources to reach her full potential as a person with vision loss. While she had
graduated high school and earned a college degree, with top honors, she did not feel complete and felt very
ashamed and embarrassed of her vision loss. Over the past nine years, she has opened many doors
and helped to break down barriers. She has volunteered work for the National Federation of the Blind
(NFB), Colorado Cross Disability Coalition (CCDC) and other various disability rights advocacy projects. In
2014 she received an ADA advocacy certificate by completing a course sponsored by CCDC. From 2013
until 2015 she was a board member for the NFB Denver based chapter, and from 2015 until 2018 she
served as chapter President for the Lakewood, Colorado NFB chapter.
